External DVD writer suggestions?

I'm looking for help finding a decent external DVD/CD writer/reader. What should I be looking for as far as specs, or have these things gotten to be a commodity anymore? Any personal recommendations? I don't need Blu Ray. Price is a concern but not necessarily number one. If there are differentiating features - especially any worth having - I'm more concerned with understanding those.

This is to be a gift for someone with an 'ultralight' notebook, an Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810T-8679. As far as I can tell it has only USB inputs, and runs on a C2D SU7300 processor.

They've come to the point that aesthetics plays a bigger role in choosing which one you want. The specs are practically identical unit to unit.

Take a look at this list of external slim DVD burners. Fine one that would match well with the notebook or the room it will be used most in.

Thanks for the advice. I opted for the SAMSUNG Black Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-S084 which was well received.

Nice selection. I like that it doesn't require an external power cord and uses just 1 USB 2.0 port for power and data transfer.

That was a big plus for portabililty. I figured, what's the point of an ultralight if they'd have to carry yet another power-brick.
