Can I just.. wipe it with a damp or dry cloth? As it's 'unused' or dry. I don't know of any cleaning agents in the house other then regular kitchen ones which I doubt are appropriate.

I'm kind of eager to get going and wouldn't know where to look if I had to go and find the cleaning agent everyones waffling on about. All gobbildy gook to me :P

I hear, which is rather obvious, that you cant just slap it on top :pt1cable:

so can I just scoop it off and wipe it? People have been saying 'zomg microscopic particles will mess your heat transfer' I'm thinking, would that even be noticeable if it did?

yeah just wipe it off with a sturdy cloth. use rubbing alcohol to help it along. Make sure you replace it with a layer of artic silver before you put it on the cpu

I don't have any solvents as far as I know that's what I mean. I live with my parents and I've no idea what they have in the way of cleaning agents other then like I say the kitchen style demestos rubbish. Not sure there's anything like what's being described. Is it safe to simply wipe it off?

If you aren't concerned about heat then why are you wanting to remove the stock compound?

Use a paper towel or coffee filter to wipe off the bulk of the material. Then use Isopropyl Alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol.. inexpensive and can be found at any drug store) and Q-Tips to clean the surface. Then apply your own TIM and attach the heatsink.

I don't have that stuff or know where to get it from, just asking as the stuff hasnt melted, it should be easy to get off? is it really needed to use this stuff? because I've heard its quite hard to get hold of. And what I meant was I wasn't concerned about 'tiny particles', not heat. I bought the paste thinking I'd need it, and most people recommend it highly above OEM so now I've got it, I'll use it.

Will a local chemist have it? if so how much is it

I'm talking about the Isopropyl

off to see if they've got any at the chemist, then. thanks all.

Just go to a local Walgreen or Walmart store. Should be around 2 bucks. For what it looks like:

You can also use pure Acetone or Goof-off, which are stronger. Make sure you finish with Rubbing Alcohol 91%. Use coffee filters to clean and a Q-tip if necessary.

Well.. I guess your screwed then. :kaola:

A local grocery shop should even carry it. All it is, for medical use, is for scraps cuts to as an antiseptic and sanitizer.
