Ok, im doing an overhaul on my PC. Currently I have a AMD 64 bit Athlon 3500+ 2.21mhz CPU, and 4 gigs of DDR ram limited by my mobo to 333mhz (boo). I have recently purchased an 8800GT OC and im going backwards to get the rest of the parts I need to boost this thing up. My case is a Silver Stone and has a good cooling system (fan based) wind tunnel type thing.
I play games, aka crysis, fps games and anything with new graphics.., also am interested in rendering 3d graphics..and lots of multi tasking with heavy apps is good because im a speed demon.
I am shopping for the CPU/RAM/MOBO and am thinking I want to get top end stuff (not too top end though) and of course if I can save money thats a bonus. Here is what I have my eye on:
CPU -
Intel Core2 Quad- Q9550 2.83ghz (1333mhz), 12mb
MOBO -
Asus P5E3 Premium (might be overkill)
RAM -
Patriot Viper DDR3 @ 2000mhz - 2 or 4 gigs ...if i get 2 now ill buy 2 more later down the line. - (maybe bad brand?)
CPU FAN - ????
Anyways,..let me know what you all think please... im sure I could save in some areas but I dont want to upgrade unless im getting a fairly maxed out system that I can keep for a good while before upgrading (save maybe the GPU in the coming years).
Thanks!!!!

The reason for such... big change is because you're not getting much more performance by going Q9550 and DDR3, although the cost is about twice as much. Personally I think you should sell your 8800GT OC, and get 4870 / 4850 or 9800GTX+. Since your computer will mostly be doing graphic intensive applications (games), its much more important to get a high end graphics card than high end CPU + Motherboard.
Now you also have the opportunity to go for multi-cards in the future, although it is more likely for you to simply sell your current graphics card and move on to the next generation graphics card. However if you are thinking about going SLI (which is not recommended) or Xfire, you should look into X48 chipset or 790i chipsets.

Ok, interesting, I wasnt sure on what hardware to drop down to, but i figured if I get the high end, I wont need a new GPU in some ways, the 8800 is a fast card, that with the quad core/fast mem, then im set for awhile. I guess another question would be, if I was to wait for new technology to come out or prices to come down, how long would that wait be do you think? and what new technologies are coming out that look the most promising? AMD? INTEL? RAM?

Given the fact that you will do FPS gaming (extremely hard on the graphics card), and 3D rendering (also take advantage of graphics engine), its probably a better choice to go for a much more robust graphics engine.
But of course, if you're not looking into selling your current 8800GT, then Intel's Q6600 along with ASUS P5Q (P45 chipset) should satisfy you. Just keep in mind that by spending majority of your resources on graphics card may be a better idea.
