with a native resolution of 14x9, should i have my desktop set to that or should i only worry about that in games and set the desktop 10x7? in other words would the desktop look really small (14x9) or normal like im used to at 10x7 on 14x9

Why don't you try it out? :) Easy solution, no?

Anyway, setting the resolution to the native one is usually better. You can even make the icons larger, if you wish.

On an LCD if you're not running at the panel's native resolution it has to scale the image. Scaled images generally don't look nearly as sharp. I'd use 1440x900 for your Windows desktop. With your system specs you shouldn't have any issues running at 1440x900 in games
