Data backed up on to a CD/DVD in one computer refuses to open the data in another computer. Shows up as empty with file system RAW instead of CDFS.

Could be a one-off problem but, given the importance of back-up, it must be worth trying another brand of DVD disc.

If you did incremental backup (ie: multisession burning) the disc will be readable only on the drive it was created on.

The DVD Disc was a one go burn session. It opens in two other computers & file system shows UDF. However it refuses to open in own system with Sony DVD-ROM

An afterthought -- of course drives which show this kind of symptom (even if it's cured by a change of media brand) are probably on the way out. Rather than risk future problems, probably better to install a new drive.
