I was just wondering whether I could upgrade my current graphics card from GeForce 8300 GS to XFX GeForce 8800 GT Alpha Dog Edition on my Dell Inspiron 531, and whether the current PSU will work with it or not.
My current specs are:
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
  • 2GB RAM
  • 320GB HDD
  • GeForce 8300 GS
  • Running on Windows Vista

I honestly doubt it, as Dell and other OEMs only put in a PSU strong enough to power the parts that they put into it. look at the side of the PSU and post what it says about total output and 12v rail amperage.

I have a Dell Dimension (not Inspiron, though) E531 and bought an ATX V2.2 500W PSU like this onE: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182076. The PSU works perfectly with 8800GT even after an AMD X2 6000+ upgrade.

Ispiron 531 has a slightly smaller case than Dimension E531, but I would guess the PSU should fit too.
