Fixing backup disk "system file error"

Vista won't let me back-up my C drive onto my external WD 500gb external drive. I get a message "system file error - fix using disk error checking tool"

So do what the OS tells you do. It wants you to run the disk error checking tool because it thinks there's something wrong with the data on your hard drive. If you keep the message after running the check, then there is something wrong.
