Hello everyone. I have a question. After reading tom's article on the budget build, I would like to ask the following.
I know that the Gigabyte GA-EP35 DS3L is legendary for its OC and stability but I can get the GIGABYTE GA-EP43-S3L for just 1$ more. When comparing them, the only thing changed appears to be the northbridge (ICH9 versus ICH10 on the EP43) and 2 extra sata connections for which I dont care.
What should I do? Should I go with the EP43 which is a bit newer or stick to the old recipe???

Also, I intend to get a Pentium E2180 as in the article and OC it. You think maybe I'd be better with a newer 45nm 5200??
This will be paired with 2Gb of ram (Supertalent, OCZ or Geil, don't know yet). I will use my old components (box, thermaltake 500W, 4870 ATI, DVD-r, Raptors etc).

P.S. I'm in a very (VERY) tight budget

Of the two, I would defiantly chose the EP43-S3L.
Both boards support FSB 1600, look to have very similar voltage regulation and both should overclock very nicely.
The EP43 will draw a little less power as it is based on a 65nm process and has PCIe 2.0.
The P43 chipset is nearly the same as the P45 but lacks support for splitting it's 16 PCIe 2.0 lanes into 8x 8x for CrossFire.

Well I've got the 43 a week ago, but still can't figure it's oc... seems complicated.. even I've got 2x2G DDR2 1066, but the board read it 800, stepping 5.5.5.18.. is that normal?

Yes, this is normal.
You will have to manually set the RAM speed, timings and voltage in the BIOS in order to run it at 1066Mhz.

As for the overclocking...
Fully read the Core 2 Overclocking Sticky.
It will give you all the necessary information on how to overclock your system.
