my friend needs a old graphics card for about <£35 for his old computer.

but im not into the old models of both ATI and Nvidia. so i came here for advice. he mentioned 7600GT,6800GT,6600GT,X800,X1650,2600 Pro.

thanks in advance.

Spec:

Pentium 4 HT OC@3.4Ghz Socket 478
1GB DDR450 CL3

What kind of PSU does he have?

The best AGP card I can think of is the HD 3850 AGP (about 80 GBP at www.ebuyer.com). But that's over budget and may need a new PSU too.

This may help:
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/graphics-cards/3dmark06-v1-0-2-hdr-sm3-0-score,538.html
(Click View all products at the bottom). It shows 2600 Pro > x1650xt > 7600GT > x1650 Pro > 6800GT > 2400 Pro > 6600GT
X800 is not on the list but I think it's among the weaker ones.

I found an HD 2400 Pro here for 31 pounds. It's perfect for an HTPC (HD video decoder included), but lousy for gaming.

Edit: if you end up with 7600GT, make sure it's the DDR3 version. There's a slower DDR2 version too.

Could only find this overbudget at 45 GBP card not even including VAT

hmm i guess thats why.i have looked through ebuyer, scan, overclocks before i came to here. they seem to be very expensive for what they are and for. so ebay is the only resort.

but i think the 7600GT is the best option right? but if his P4 3.4Ghz will limit the graphics card might as well get something that wouldnt. any recommendation for a lower spec card?

I was stuck in the same boat. The problem with trying to game with AGP is that the price to performance ratio is so out of whack compared to PCI-e that it is hard to justify buying anything AGP that can even moderately perform. Personally, I just stuck with console gaming (and I have always been a PC gamer) until I could afford to update my PC to PCI-express. Unfortunately, this usually involves purchasing at least a new mobo, cpu, and ram before you even get to the video card. The last decent AGP card I used was the 6600GT, which was good in it's day. The X800 series was good too, although your friend will want to watch which version he's getting as their was a huge performance disparity in the different x800 models. You may be able to go back in the Tom's archives to look at the VGA charts for AGP cards to compare benchmarking.

dont 2600pro require an extra power connector for it to work?so does the 7900GS?

i think you might have forgotten the <£35 budget!lol his P4 wouldnt be powerful to run those card at full potential.so why waste it right?

i think 7600GT is the best option right?

i wish i would have considered that before i bought the DDR2 version :fou:. the best bet for your friend would probably be a 2600pro, or a 2400xt if the first one is too expensive.

i think 2400XT<7600GT. he will only be gaming at DX9 anyway so DX10 compatible is not his aim. and a new card would be too "expensive" for his old rig.

anyone agree on the 7600GT>or is the 2400XT with 40shader more powerful???

Looks good. Both are DDR3 (the first one doesn't say, but it's obvious because the memory clock of 1600MHz is huge. The other one has 1200MHz, and it does say DDR3).

Is it safe to buy video cards on eBay? I never tried it. Those sellers have great scores, so it's probably OK. Let us know how it goes, and good luck!

i emailed him he is looking for £50!!!!i might as well get a new more powerful 2600Pro then with DX10 comp and unified shader.

it just clearly shows how eager people are toward some old junk they got now.
