I've had this computer that I built for about 8 months now and love it. I play wow and my microphone keeps going out so I thought maybe it was the "realtek audio controler" thing that I use. I decided to uninstall that not knowing that it controls all of my audio. Now I have no sound. I found my cd for the motherboard and tried to reinstall the audio driver stuff but it says it's already installed. What do I do? I just want my sound back. Sorry for such a noob question.
Thanks,
Ryan

Does system restore format my hd? I'd like to keep all programs that I have currently if possible.

System restore essentially keeps a backup of all critical files for your PC. When you run it, it restores any critical files that have been removed. 99.9% of the time, anything you've done after the date you restore to won't be affected.

You can find system restore under Start->Accessories->System Tools

I'd think you'd be safe to (once you're SURE you have the LATEST drivers for your mobo's audio) go to Device Mangler ...I mean Device Manager...and uninstall ALL the audio devices there. Then reinstall them using your freshly downloaded drivers. If onboard audio suits your needs, that should get it back for you.

You could always take this opportunity as an excuse to get a real soundcard, ...doesn't have to be Creative (I'm aware that being anti-Creative is currently fashionable). ie, Asus Xonar, HT Omega Striker, Auzentech Prelude, etc., etc.

I know that's not what you asked for but cheers!

Yes, I use an Intel Quad. Sometimes its a little overclocked, sometimes a bit underclocked. Yet, its always nice, the virtualiztion is sick. And?

^ Should have thought of that myself. Check the Device Manager and see if any sound drivers are still hanging around, then try to re-install again.
