I know that these cards trade blows, but which one do you recommend for absolute price vs performance? The 9600 GT is 20 bucks more expensive than the 8800 gs, but is it worth the extra cost? Will the extra stream processors on the 8800 gs help it in the future?
I live in the States and I don't plan on spending $119 on a video card since if I was going up to that price point I'd definitely get the 4850.
But wow, $99 for the Asus 8800 GT, that's tempting. The only drawback I find in that card is that it does not look good, but hey, who cares right? Though the reviews on it are not that great and not many have bought it...I don't trust newegg reviews but this worries me a bit about buying it.

8800GT is more on par with the 9600GT. Those are the two to be comparing.
8800GS < 9600GT < 8800GT
Seems to me, that when I was researching my 8800GTS (512MB version) I had initially looked at the 9600 GT. I found that the 8800GT was slightly faster, and the 8800GTS (512MB version (G92)) was faster than both.
Personally though, if you were really going between 9600GT vs 8800GS I'd go with the 9600.
EDIT:
By the way, the 8800GS has 96 Stream Processors. The 8800GT has 112 Stream Processors. The 9600GT has only 64 Stream Processors. Usually more Stream Processors equals better speeds. So I guess the 9600GT is pretty impressive considering it has so few processors eh?

If you are going to overclock, 8800gs has more potential. 8800gs relatively low 550 core 1375SP and 800mhz memory doesn't do the card justice. Check out my card overclocked speeds in my sig and review.
Usually 9600gt wins with AA benchmarks because it has more bandwidth. 8800gs will beat the 9600gt in raw performance without AA because it has more SP and TMU.
If you can get the 8800gs cheaper I say go for that. You aren't going to see much difference.
Also, check out the 9600gso series cards. The gso's are supposed to be renamed 8800gs series cards basically the same cards. When I did my research, it seemed if you could get an overclocked 8800gs it may actually perform better than the 9600gt. However, I think the lack of memory may hold you back at higher resolutions, so you have to know what resolution you intend to play at.
