I found this interesting. Some of you might find it interesting too. I just got oblivion and I have been surfing the mods on it to try and make the otherwise pretty good game a little more interesting. Also my hd 4850 wasn't much challenged by the card at my resolution. Stumbled across this.
Oblivion is not that graphically challenging of a game, but with a mod that allows all details to be seen from an infinite distance things got interesting. I tried it just for the novelty and it ruined my fps. Crysis runs fine and I couldn't play this. Author says that a 8800gtx and a 2.6ghz core2duo gets 15fps at 1280x1024 resolution.
"I have a radeon 4870 so I figured I'd drop a comment to people wondering about how this mod performs on this card.
My system is brand new and is running on Vista 64 bit. I have 4 gigs of RAM, a Q9450, and the 4870. I have been adding on a ton of higher texture mods (Qarl's texture pack III, 4096 distant lod textures, ect.) and I've maxed out all the in-game settings at 1600x1050 and HDR lighting. I've also tweaked the .ini to further enhance the graphics.
Before MTAEVWD the worst FPS I would get outdoors is mid 30's, and that's looking at far distances in the middle of combat. I probably average somewhere around the low 50's. My only issue is some hard drive stuttering.
With MTAEVWD my frame rate dropped - a lot. The stuttering is pretty much a constant, so I can't give a very accurate range, but the highest I saw was about 23 fps and the lowest was 2 (though this is likely due to my one 7200 HDD). While it does add in a few more distant objects the graphical improvement is incredibly minor. On vanilla Oblivion I think the card could handle it with no problem, even if the games settings were maxed. But if you've already got a bunch of ultra-high res textures this mod will murder your FPS."
The quality is not enough to really get excited about. Still, could be used as a benchmark for latter graphics cards maybe. The hd 4870x2 just made crysis playable at max settings.
