I was looking at how much it would roughly to cost to upgrade to an i7 system using the lowest new i7 processor(920). And when looking at the ddr3-1066 memory(920 can only support up to that) I started to wonder was is it worth the extra money to get 3gb of ram.
I know that the difference from dual to tri channel is minimal on average 0.6% according to to yesterday's review, but I want to know the performance hit windows vista home premium would take going from 3gb to 2gb(no sites seem t want to give a straight answer). At the moment I have 4gb of 800mhz corsair xms2 memory, and this is about 3gb on my vista system, due to SLi 9600gt, and I only really play Warhammer online and some other older classics(Uplink, sins of a solar empire, medieval total war 2).
DDR3/DDR2 mem is designed to and works at higher performance when installed in pairs. Install either two of the same type mem or four of the same type and size for the best performance.

In the i7's case that is not correct. DDR3 is a requirement and matched sets of three will yield the highest performance.
If you are going to blow all the cash to be a early adopter you might as well go for it. I really hope you have a purpose for it though. Otherwise it would be much wiser to hold off until they become more mainstream.
I will add that after a quick check of MB's that support ddr3 mem they seemed to be setup as paired slots. I didn't check everyone in the world but here is a for instance -
