4870 cf would be cheaper and perform faster.

Would DEFINITELY depend on your resolution, I would not recommend the gtx 285 since the 275 performs only a bit slower and is nearly half the price. So a simple OC would make them the same, But then again the gtx 285 sounds cooler ^^

But, if you are gaming at say, 1680x1050 you would definitely see better results from the Gtx285 but anything over that, the 4870's would win IF you have the 1gb versions. I do not believe 512mb cards are meant to run at 1920x1080 and over.
