Laptop question

Hello, Windows won't start up because a vital file is corrupted or missing. What can I do retrieve my files?

can you get into Save Mode?

can you run a scandisk?

If you just want your data, you can use a Linux Live CD.

I want to get Windows working again, but I don't have the program CD to repair it with. What are some options? I at least want to save the data. How do I acquire the Linux Live CD?
