At what resolution do you want to play it at? And do you want AA?

If you just want to play it at ~1280/1024 max settings then i would go with:
GeForce 8600 GTS $80 - $90
1 gig of ram (2 if vista) $20 - $40
Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 Allendale 2.4GHz $120
~ $235 + case, power supply, motherboard, hard drive, cd drive.

If you want to play it at ~1600/1200 max settings 4xAA then i would go with:
GeForce 8800 GT $140 - $150
1.5 gig of ram (2 if vista) $25 - $40
Intel Core 2 Duo E4700 2.6GHz $140
~ $320 + case, power supply, motherboard, hard drive, cd drive.

With all due respect to DGriffin, the e4000 series was made obsolete by the e7200. You get more cache, 45 nm design, and overclockability to around 3.8 GHz for $124, with free shipping.

Similarly, the 8800GT was made obsolete by the ATI 4850 at $155 after rebate, and free shipping.

You build your system around both of those components, and you will have a smoking system that maxxes BF2/2142--regardless of anything else you buy.

You can also get some killer OCZ Plat. rev. 2, 2 GB pair for under $20, free shipping via NewEgg.

An excellent 600 watt OCZ power supply for ~$50 after rebate, free shipping from NewEgg.

And a top of the line Antec 900 case for $79, free shipping from NewEgg.

It is an excellent time to buy a system!

no offense dgriffin, but what you recommended isn't all that great.

get a p43 motherboard, an e7200, 2 gigs of ram, and a 4850, or even a 3850 or 3870 if you don't wanna spend too much. BF2 is an old game now, so you won't need a monster video card to play it, but eventually i'm sure you'd like to try some newer games, so get a system that can handle it.

They are giving this away too!!! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341012 Your board won't Crossfire, so this is all the PSU you would need. $39
