Hi, I'm looking to upgrade the CPU of an older system I have. And was wondering if it would be both possible and reasonable.

The system currently is as follows:

CPU: AMD64 3500+
Mobo: Asus AV8 K8T800 Pro Socket 939

I'm looking to upgrade the CPU, without spending too much, as it is an old system.

Any CPU suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

Overall, save up for a new system. The only reliable place for Socket 939 CPU's is Ebay. Newegg doesn't carry them, and the only one Tiger Direct has is:

For the money, I would rather put the money towards a new system.

Used Socket 939 Processors tend to be very expensive since they are no longer made and have a high demand for folks try to upgrade old system.

It would not be recommended to try and upgrade that system.

its not good theory.

if you want cheap just pick up an AM2/AM2+ Motherboard, 2Gb of RAM and a 780G/GX chipset. Can do that for under GBP£100 these days.

Tiger direct still lists an opty180 which should be a rather nice upgrade from your 3500. In AUS we still have a fair selection of 939 CPU's, but the US seems to be into 'forced obsolence'...

I agree with the others, save up and get a new budget system. Ram is cheap, and budget dual cores can be had for under 50 bucks. Motherboard's can be bought for 50-100, use the same case, hd, dvd rom, etc. It won't set you back too much. Really.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I've decided to leave the system as is. I have another machine, and was simply trying to get the most of this older one, but it doesn't seem feasible. I'm also not sure a X2 processor would even be compatible with the board. Also, it's an AGP, and upgrading to a new video card is out of line for what I want to spend on a new machine.

Again, thanks for the advice.
