"graphics and displays" doesn't have a "display" subsection so I hope it's ok to post this here but I have a samsung 204b and just started using the power saving feature which turns off the backlight after x minutes of no activity (I use "suspend" and "power off" which IIRC actually shuts off power to the monitor); are these anything like other electrical devices where their lives get shortened just by virtue of constantly having it powered down/powered back up?

Like my grandfather says "there's only so many turns in a crank" I don't want to be shortening the life of my monitor if cycling the power many times per day has a worse effect than just leaving it on while I'm using my computer.

CCFL should be fine, although it will promote failure, but at such a small rate as to not be a major issue IMO.

LEDs would be beter for that, but we're talking about a really minor difference. It was much tougher to power on/off CRTs.

The problem IMO is that unlike CRTs CCFL and LEDs just sorta go 'poof' all of a sudden with no warning. I've had two fail in my time, but one was a few month old, the other over 5 years old (had become a web surfing machine for the living room).

IMO you're more likely to have a faillure due to some hidden mfr malfunction than due to powering on/off. Of course if there is a defect it will make it appear sooner rather than later, so just hope it's under warranty, because IMO unlike many other things on your PC, there's not much you can do about it that has a measurable / practical impact.

Anything can happen. Generally turning on / off a monitor will not increase the chances of the CCFL to fail all of the sudden.

My first LCD monitor (19" Planar PX191) is about 6 years old. I've been turning on and off the monitor twice sometimes three times a day or more; nearly every single day. My monitor is still going strong. Although I have to admit it is a premium grade monitor which costs $650 (on sale and with a coupon) back in 2002.
