Windows XP - Windows 7 Upgrade

Hi, I discussed needing an upgrade from windows XP to windows 7 to my friend and he said some of my hardware wont have drivers in windows 7 so I should first put a windows vista disk in and upgrade rather than do a fresh install then do the same to windows 7.

Will this work? Thanks
