I debated all the usual (Dual or Quad, AMD or Intel) , and I think I have picked out the best hardware available in the price range.

I%u2019m pretty sure I want the Q6600, unless comments say otherwise

The gfx card and mobo I am really open to suggestions.

I am a gamer, also a Photoshop user as well as everything use. Usually multiple windows open doing a lot at one.

I may OC after a few months, more just for fun then power hungry. I already have a case, fans, HDD, and roms.

Would like this PC to last me 4ish years.

Thank ahead of time for any comment / suggestions.

Looks fine However change the RAM to a DDR2 800 RAM with 4-4-4-x or lower timings, also go for ASUS P5K-E WIFI instead(because the difference between P5K-E WFI and DELUXE is that the DELUXE model has only one gigabit lan and one more copper which isnt really important, other specs are the same.)

Also how will this setup (with quad) work in XP?

I am not a big fan of vista, even though I know my new setup will run it better...

Maziar, you shouldn't judge RAM based solely on timings. Voltage should also be considered. I'd much rather get this Mushkin kit with 5-4-4-12 @ 1.8V than this OCX kit with 4-4-4-15 @ 2.1V.

But regardless, paying $270 for 4gigs of 800MHz RAM is ridiculous.

edit - LOL, you took the words right out of my mouth Linkin.

:( Hmmm, if I'd not been too lazy to actually click the link and see the price, I'd have agreed.
I definitely agree with Wanker. Mushkin has become my preferred RAM because it almost always runs at the JEDEC default voltage of 1.8v. I think that's the kit I'm running in my rig. No problems at all, and I didn't need to play musical sticks and mess with voltages before it would boot and see all of it. I can always boost it a little later if I want a higher OC.

$80 after MIR; that's an excellent price. If I needed a PSU...

(but I don't. I may be about to build another limited-purpose box, but I've got a perfectly adequate 400W FSP for it...)

I do photo shop but it is not a major thing... I do flash videos but not really anything extreme..

Main thing would be multitasking and gaming from time to time. And something that will last...

So with that being said....

4850 or 8800GT
Q6600 or E8400

Timings are a very important factor for OC'ng,also for OverClocking Core2Duo/Quads its good to set the RAM to 2.0 or 2.1 for getting a stable OC

Dude this is already OLD, Especially for gaming use.
Heres what U should get..

Get a SLI Board 790i Ultra, Allow for 3 GFX Cards (8800 GTS or better)
AT least a 1000W PSU, 1TB HDD, DDR3 1333, Q9450 or Dual Core.

For gaming core clock speed is more useful than a quad core, so if you can't afford a really fast quad, get a faster dual core.

These specs are actually what i am building at the moment.
In a few more months i'll have all these parts to start. :)

At least if you build one like this in 4 years it won't be so old!!

It's this crazy thing called a budget. I'd love to have that setup, too. Too bad not all of us can blow a ****-ton of $$$ on parts. His setup is a good one, tbh.

Imo, Yes, by a little bit. But, that's debatable. I have yet to have a PP&C or a Corsair unit die on me.

OCZ 700W:
http://www.cluboverclocker.com/reviews/power/ocz/Silencer610/Page3.asp
Look at the results for the +12V1

PP&C 610
http://www.cluboverclocker.com/reviews/power/ocz/Silencer610/Page3.asp
Look at the +12 results.

In the PP&C 610 it was between 11.6v and 11.7v. For the OCZ 700W it was between 12.21v and 12.41v.

Both are good units, but the PP&C 610 is a little better.

Look good?

Thanks shadow :)

Yeah it looks good but dont get an E8500,get an E8400 instead because the difference is that E8500 is 100mhz faster and has 9.5x multiplier compared to 9x of E8400,so the difference isn't worth the price.
