I currently have a 7800GT and have been looking to upgrade to a 9800 GX2. My PSU is a 750W Thermaltake Toughpower and I am wondering whether this is powerful enough and has the right power connectors in order to run the 9800 GX2, it is fine if I will somehow need to modify some of the connectors in order to get it to work (if that is even posible?). My motherboard is an Asus M3A and my processor is a Phenom 9950 if that is needed information. I am not too PC minded and so sorry if I will need to explain things in greater detail later.
If the PSU is definitely not capable, then could you please recommend one of the cheapest PSU's that will be able to run it.
It's enough, 9800GX2 require 1xPCI-E 6 pin and 1xPCI-E 8 pin power connectors, I'm sure EVGA have the connectors in their package for you. I don't know about others.
Your PSU is definitely capable of running the 9800GX2. It can also run a 280GTX or a 4870x2. Any single card rig is fine on that. Yours has 2x6pin + 1x8pin PCI-Express connectors or 1x6pin + 1x8pin, depending on the model. So no need to modify anything, maybe you even have an extra connector. And to answer your question, yes, it is possible to modify the connectors through adaptors.
Thanks for your replies. The problem I was thinking I would encounter is currently that my 8 pin connector goes into my motherboard as apparently that requires 12v. I do not think there is another 8 pin connector in the box. Would I be able to buy additional connectors, for example form the Thermaltake website, and where would I go abut plugging in the additional 8 pin connector?
