I have a 50 inch hdtv by Hitachi...its about a year old and is now a
discontinued model...Excellent picture...sound...but I want to hook up some
cordless headphones so that I can watch tv and kill the sound on the tv but
get the sound through the headphones....Now there are two outputs on the
back of the tv that allow this...one is the hifi output..but that sound is
controlled by the volume sound of the tv...and the other is the monitor
outputs...but everytime I hook up these headphones..i get no sound out of
the monitor outputs...

I guess my question is what the likely hood of the monitor outputs being
bad?...what would be an easy way to test them?

thanks..

What kind of plug is on the wireless headphone base station? If it's a
headphone plug, you'll have to connect it to a headphone jack - either
on the TV or an external audio receiver. Run one of the monitor
outputs to the audio receiver.

It's unlikely that both sets of your TV's audio jacks are bad.

I'm not familiar with this specific model; however, some of these sets
require configuring some of the outputs from a software menu. I don't know
if this is your problem. You could test them by running the output to
another device...such as your stereo receiver or some other small
amplifier....but this won't answer the "config" issue.

Good luck....

The monitor output is probably a kind of "line" output, so at relatively
high impedance (10 kohms or so), so if you load it by a headphone (which
impedance is generally in the order of 32 ohms), you will get practically no
signal.
Check the output impedance of the monitor out and the headphone input, and
if it is how I described, you will need some kind of amplifier inbetween or
find a headphone with a true "line" input.
Check also if this monitor output has not a separate volume or mute control
hidden somewhere in a menu ...
