Hi so i managed to succesfully OC my i7 920 to 4.0 GHz using this guide (www.bit-tech.net/harware/cpus/2008/11/06/overclocking-intel-core-i7-920/1)

my idle temps are 43-46 C which i think is normal. When i run the Large FTT stress test on Prime95, i got a load temp of 82 C so i got scared and stopped the test. These load temps are way to high right?? Im using the Cooler master v8 cooler. please advise, should i lower my clock?

Yes, those temps are about right and they are a bit high. I usually get into the 80's quite easily at 4GHz with the i5 on air.

Should you lower your clock? Maybe, but see if you can lower your voltage to start with. I'm assuming one step down in voltage results in instability. You may find happier times with lower voltage and less heat at 3.9 or 3.8GHz.

What is the voltage at 4GHz?
Also, at what point did you need to increase voltage from stock (you know, 3.5GHz or something) to keep everything stable?

To be honest i just pretty much copied and pasted the BIOS settings from here
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/c [...] e-i7-920/3

AI Overclock Tuner - Manual.
Intel Turbo Mode - Disabled
BCLK Frequency - 200(MHz)
DRAM Frequency - 1,600MH
CPU Voltage - 1.35V
CPU PLL Voltage - 1.96V
QPI/DRAM Voltage - 1.35V
DRAM Voltage - 1.66V

i know i shouldve raised the clock by increments of 10 etc etc but i did that until i got to 3.4 but overshocked's guide didnt give me enough info on what to set some of the other settings to.

some help please :D

if i lower down my settings do i only have to change the BCLK Frequency or do i need to change everything.

1. Dram voltage is too high
2. Cpu voltge MAY be too high
3. Do you have HT on?
4.You sat your inperfectly.(Reseat it)
5. You cut corners and ask for help?

ok well i have OCed it to 3.6 and its stable

i guess this is good enough for my purposes

can some1 check my cpu-z and tell me if my settings will damage my cpu? My idle temps are around 39-45 and load are around mid-high 70's, so pretty stable.

Is it just stable or "Prime stable" ??

Great! Then these are the average load temps but what are the Prime95 burn-in tests temps??
Also if temps went higher than 80s you should underclock it as the V8 cooler isn't that good at handling i7 OC'ed temps!
