I'm pretty sure CrossfireX has the edge. Neither is a very cost effective option right now though.

i hope you first have the big screen and the money to pay for the power bills
but right now 2 4870X2 give the biggest score

you won't got the very high score on dual-4870x2, also tri-gtx. I suggest you just use one card 4870x2 (better) or one card gtx280

Tri-SLI GTX 280 whoops Quad 4870 X2 all over the board. Not one title won by Two (2) 4870 X2 in CrossFireX. Hopefully more reviews come out. Drivers used: 179.83 vs 8.8.4 beta.

Before any conclusions can be made, we have to see more reviews. I don't trust that site so until Anand makes a review the battle is still on.

actually that site is pretty respectable:p  well I think they do pretty accurate reviews...but tthats just me!

To me it would be logical if 3 280 GTXs won against 2 4870 X2.

Since the X2 is 30% faster than the 280 GTX, lets see:

280 GTX vs 4870 X2 - The 4870 X2 is 30% faster.
280 GTX sli vs 4870 X2 CrossX - The 4870 X2 CrossX is 30% faster.
3 280 GTX sli vs 4870 X2 CrossX - The 4870 X2 CrossX is 60%faster.

Thats the math, but is it practical? No since sli and CrossX scale differently. Buts that how it would look in my opinion if they scaled the same:)

using the cheapest prices on newegg.com:

CF 4870x2 = $ 1100
TriSLI GTX280 = $ 1260

therefore the Tri280 should be giving better performance, its $160 more! Theres no doubt, ATI rulez.

You added a GTX280 and then said the CF HD4870x2 goes from 30% faster to 60% faster. The more nvidia's u add the faster the ATI go :D ?

CrossX 4870x2 or 2 way or 3 way sli with 280s hardly matters as thats like 0.1% of the entire market users, I certainly can never afford to spend 600 quid on graphics cards, lol.

Heck even single 4870x2's and gtx 280s only target a tiny fraction of the graphics market - meh

While true DH is a great site, read what theyve said. Somethings not right between skulltrail and the ATI cards. Also, look at the drivers. This is the first driver from ATI, while nVidia has has time to tweak. Looking at the TR review, youll see a wider amount of games, where ATI has its advantages. All n all, its a scratch, while you dont need the super uber mobo using the ATI solution, as well as its 160$ cheaper from the get go. Save more on the psu using the ATI as well. In the end, all things being even, ATI is still the most cost friendly

Who gave him a -1 just for speaking the obvious? +1 to cancel it out... :sarcastic:

4870x2 cf, at least as it is right now, has major scaling issues. In a few cases, it performs below a single 4870x2.

It's somewhat similar to how the 3870x2 cf behaved. They never came around to optimize the drivers for 3870x2 cf. While 4870x2 cf is more likely to get the driver fix, as it's much more popular, you shouldn't count on it, in case history repeats itself.

It's also worth noting that CrossFire appears to have issues with Skulltrail, as I believe the article notes, and I've pointed out in previous threads where that article is brought up.

There's no actual evidence behind that. While there aren't many benchmarks of 4870x2 cf against 280gtx tri sli, there are a lot of 4870x2 cf vs 4870x2 vs 280gtx dual sli. And in many games 4870x2 cf performs below a single 4870x2, not to mention gtx280 dual sli. Quad cf has serious scaling problems. Wait for quad cf driver optimization to come out... if they come out.

:D  . The scaling in some games is very bad, but for the ones that work....Anyway I hope that ATI will solve this with new drivers... 8.9 maybe :p  . For my heart content I'm glad that ATI won this round at all normal (not insane ;)  ) price ranges. I was getting fed up with the nVidia TWIMTBP crap. Because of the arrogance of nVidia I gave up their cards and switched to ATI. For once I helped the underdog.

I only saw one test on this (i forget where), and the tri-280's won. Quad-CF/SLI needs too much driver support to make it an effective option.
