Video cards are now so powerfull that they are being used for the wrong reasons

http://www.lockergnome.com/it/2008 [...] a-hacking/

These are using a language on its stream processors to crack codes on WPA wireless networks which are considered one of the highest security settings...

Look out for wireless downloads of illegal torrents comming to your door weather you did it or not....

Dont confuse this with 'cracking', they are still using a brute force method.

But how many routers have mac address lockout

er not many

Every one I've owned does, though you have to be smart enough to set it up.

well then...

better make sure you get a router that does :)

or use a wired router (or a wireless one with the wireless portion turned off) and then use an old computer with linux on it and create a fully customizable access point which includes mac tables, WPA2, and whatever other security you can throw at it.

i only use mac filtering on my router

when i lived in the city, no one was leeching my connection, my router showed me a table of connected devices and only the comps that i use were ever listed

i live in the boonies now so if someone is trying to jack my connection over wireless, i can see them outside and have a nice talk with them.

That is sort of like bringing a wet noodle to a Gun Fight.

Hackers will be able to determine the MAC Addresses that are in use in the valid conversation and spoof those.

Yes, I use Mac Address Filtering as an added layer of security against, but it will not keep out a serious hacker. The tools being used in these attacks are far more sophisticated than MAC filtering.

its not good theory.

a serious hacker will gain entry into the system anyways if given enough time and has a lot of patience (thats when you find them in person if possible and beat the sh!t outta them for hacking your network hehe)

WPA2/mac filter keeps out the casual leechers and "ill just find someone's wireless network and use it instead of paying for my own connection" type of people, you know those type that are so cheap they would sell their own mothers for a buck type people

i only have mac filters right now since i live in the sticks, not many ppl out here to jack my connection, does the job in this case

in the city if i suspected that connection was being hacked over wireless i would have turned on WPA2 but then the DS wouldnt have worked :(

or just turn the whole thing off, hardwire everything, thats bulletproof, unless someone hacks your ethernet cable lol

Der..

Im not talking about my router... Well obviously my router is protected.. im talking about the people who have routers around all over the place generally have WEP or WPSK-Tkip protection.....

Stuck up people like you really dont live in the real world .. do you

Hmmm, most routers I have dealt with have mac address filtering. I thought it was a standard feature.

getting emotional aren't we? how do u infer stuck up from my posts?

back to the topic; if they haven't protected their routers then who's problem is that? Mine or theirs?

Most people i run into who need help with wireless networking dont care about wireless security and i will then explain to them that "i can go on your internet and then download sh!tloads of stuff and you will get the bill" after that line their ears perk up a bit and you have some of their attention. And then I mention that "someone could go on your connection and download kiddie p0rn and now it's definitely your problem since it's through your connection" now after this line, joe average should be giving you his/her undivided attention when you go on to explain how to secure a router. If at this point joe average is still indifferent, then it isnt my problem...
