Hey all,

As the title states I'm looking to design a new PC to run World of Warcraft and its upcoming expansion. I only play WoW and some WC3(really not an issue).

In WoW in raids and in capital cities my FPS dips into the 9-15fps range :/ I need to get 60+ easily, hopefully at high settings.

I am a college student, so money is a bit tight, but I'll splurge on cooling to net an overall performance increase with overclocking.

I was thinking of building my PC around the reasonably priced E7200 Wolfdale, as I've heard you can get these things up to 2.9-3.1 Ghz on a stock vcore.

That should be it!
Keep in mind this pc only needs to run vent and wow simultaneously, nothing like crysis or high demand games. I realize the PSU is only 400 W, but I dont think this hardware should be too demanding. Went with the new SATA interface and 7200 rpm hard drive. I have 32 bit vista, which is what I will probably be running on this rig.

Comes out to $644, which achieves my sub $800 goal. Is there anything you guys would recommend to knock up performance to 60 frames in high settings in WoW? Will this PC even run wow 60 frames in low?

Thanks!!!

drop the 3870 and get a 4850 instead. the performance increase will be massive, and is well worth the extra few dollars. a bigger hard drive would probably be a good idea too. other than that, the system is fine. after all, WoW is not by any means a demanding game. you can even play it on a mac! :D

Ty for feedback, upgraded to 4850.
I'm concerned with the microATX build.
Is the hassle worth the cool-ness factor?

Dump MicroATX as Fast as you can.
It's has not "Coolness" factor.
Just a "HotNess Factor".

The 4850 can put off some heat and tossing that in a small with minimal ventilation is not a great idea.

In this day and age, the only factor that's really going to hold you back (I would think, but not an expert) is your network connection. By that, I mean I'm getting 75fps with an Athlon x2 5000+BE at 2.8 and an 8800GT, all settings maxed, all the time. You shouldn't have much of a problem with any recent graphics card that's at least midrange (not classifying the 8600GTS as midrange...at least 9600GT or HD3850). And I'm running at 1280x1024.

3870= every tweak and override in ati maxed as much as possible including adaptive AA and 24x edge detect AA, 60fps possibly more fps if frame tearing didn't tick me off so much... 4850=will do it blindfolded with 1 arm and 1 leg tied behind back... nuff said. (note:1680x1050 on system quoted). and if wow is the machines only goal, check out the msi gx-610 series of notebooks... hd 2600 will run wow great, along with some other games for around 8-1200 bucks depending on your specs. find them at www.ibuypower.com and www.buyxg.com are the cheapest i've found. www.msicomputer.com is the mfg web site with the prebuilt specs.... i buy and buyxg both use barbones versions. Anyway. Just a thought, and yes you'll be fine with a 4850 and be able to stomp newer games as well.

note: power supply probably won't run the 4850. and if it does, it will be very close and not do so for long. Get an empty case and hit a psu with at least 600 watts and i would suggest at least a combined 12v rail of 30 amps or more just so your psu won't have to be replaced in a year or less.

also: if only your first 12v rail will be running your video card if you have a multi 12v rail setup.

anyway. enjoy the build, jack up the psu, otherwise you'll regret it (specially with ocing) and listen to one of the people that gets paid to build systems on a daily basis. (me) haha.

Man that for only 600$ at newegg? Man! I cannot wait for newegg.ca coming soon! It is going to be one hell of an opening day for canadians!

To answer your questions, Fine rig to play WoW at 40-100fps. I used to play that game on a p4 3.2ghz, 8600gt oced at 25-70 fps on high.

Drop the P35 mobo and get this Asus P43. The P35 doesn't have PCI E 2.0
And swap the Asus 4850 with an MSI one with aftermarket cooling

EDIT: With the P43 you need a FSB of 1333. Upgrade to the E8400. $40 more but WELL worth it
