No sound, weird display

My computer is starting to age, i'm in the process of building a new one but i still want the one i have right now to run. It's running fine at the moment however their are two issues with it. The first MAJOR issue is that i have NO sound what-so-ever on a perfectly good headset. I know this because i can hear the waves in the headset working and also when i go to my Sound Effect thing for my MB, i can test out my headset and hear differen't sounds, however, everything else in windows like music,video and games, no sound works. Anyone know what's going on, and how to fix it? i tried reinstalling windows media player by upgrading to wmp 11 and it didn't work. The second issue i'm having is that when i go to play certain games my monitor starts to go in like a reset mode, it will go black and the power button will blink on and off and not refresh to the game. Is it just my hardware failing like possibly my video card? How can i fix these problems?
