asus p4p8oo mb

Wife's computer, w/ ASUS P4P800 Deluxe MB. The 2.6 cpu not working.

MB bios is rev 2.0

Only cpu available at Newegg for socket 478 is the 3.0 Prescott (OEM) w/ 1mb cache.

Can I use the Prescott 3.0, just pop it in, and do no bios flash? I don't want to have to flash the bios. And, since it is OEM w/ no HSF...what to get for HSF....easiest to install...

Thx so much, guys... I need info ASAP, as my wife is on me to get this fixed...

Brian

  1. The oldest BIOS for the P4P800 Deluxe is 1009 and the latest one is 1021.006. Could it be the motherboard that's a revision 2.0? CPU support list and required BIOS version can be found at http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4P800%20Deluxe.
  2. Imo, it's not worth it. Get a new AMD AM2 board and a CPU.

    GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2 AM2+/AM2
    $55

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103215
    AMD Athlon X2 BE-2400 Brisbane 2.3GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Dual-Core Processor - OEM
    $40

    Plus $20-25 for a HSF

    Total: $115.

The P4 is $80, so this is only $35 more and you get MUCH better performance.
  3. I appreciate where you're coming from, but I don't have time to do swap-out on the MB, etc...

If I get another Northwood 2.6, it's about $25. All she does on the computer is email, web-surf, and some word-games. I'm the one into gaming...fast comp is on my desk... :)
