CPU clockspeed and Gaming Performance

I have recently purchased a 'gaming' rig, with
Gigabyte Ga-EP45-DS3R
and 4850.

It may sound ironic that I have oriented my rig with games in mind but I still would like it as quiet and mainly, consume as little power as possible when I'm not doing any heavy lifting stuff.

I have the CPU throttling on so CPU will switch from 2Ghz~3Ghz and I was told that with this chip, the multiplier will only go down to 6x so that's as low as it will go.

My next objective is to cool down 4850 perhaps by software under-clocking when not in use. not even sure if this is possbile. (RivaTuner maybe?)

Is there anything else I can do on CPU/motherboard side of things to basically dumb down the machine for basic internet browsing etc?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

  1. I'm not sure about this but I think there is a Gigabyte utility that can dynamically adjust voltages for the CPU depending on usage. You can also try undervolting your CPU, that'll reduce power consumption considerably.

For the GPU, use ATI Tool or RivaTuner to set separate profiles for 2D and 3D.
