My motherboard's user manual says that its compatible only with "Socket AM2 for AMD Athlon FX 64 / Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core / Athlon 64 / Sempron processor"

but... the website for my motherboard ( http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2539 ) claims that it "Supports AMD Phenom X4/ Phenom X3 processors". So which is right?

i know that if you install an AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherbord, the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0 to HT1.0... but will a Phenom X3 or X4 otherwise work in my system?

Thanks for any help or further information

My computer is:
AMD: Athlon 64 X2 5200+ @ 2912 MHz
Mobo: Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 w/ nForce 570 SLI chipset
RAM: 4GB Mushkin DDR2 PC2-6400
OS: Vista 64bit
VC: EVGA 8800 GTS 320MB

the site says the X4 9950 isn't supported, is this because the site isn't updated, or is the frequency to high for the mobo?

the X4 9850 has the same wattage and system bus and is supported...

This being an older board I'd stick to 95w. If the CPU compatability chart shows 125w 9850 then the 125w 9950 should be OK.

I'd get a 8750 x3 Black.
