I asked a question a few days ago about my brothers pc, and now have one for my own. I have the following power supply.

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6817103928

And can pick up a used 6800 Ultra 256MB PCI-E for five bucks where I work, will my power supply be ok? From my research I cannot find a good answer, some say 480W, some say 350W.

That PSU will be fine for that GPU.

Yeah, that should be way more than enough for a 6800 ultra... I'd almost tell you just to get a 8600 instead if your gonna get that PSU, but for five bucks that card is still a steal..

Good luck!

I'd heard 350 watts. I looked on the Nvidia site and didn't see any information. I think you'll be MORE than safe with the PSU you listed.

I am a warehouse manager for a computer recycling company, so I can get really nice stuff that is a year or two old at dirt cheap prices :)

Anyone know what the heat is like on this thing? I have 120MM fan exhaust and a PCI Slot 80MM fan exhaust which will be right under the card, with an 80mm fan intake. Think I will be good?

BTW I already own that PSU, we just got one of these cards in and tested today.

I would feel a little better if the PSU was "newer", but you should be fine with that one. It might be 430W, but thats sustained instead of peak, and most of that is on the 12V rail(s) instead of the 3.3 and 5V. This means plenty of power for recent CPUs and video cards. You do have a semi recent PSU in there right?

It doesnt really matter if it is a newer PSU since its a semi old graphics card..

And i used a 350w psu for 5 years at least and it never choked, and it was an offbrand.. so..

It might be an old card, but if my memory serves, it consumes more power then the 7000 series. Powersupplies can also wear down with age, they call it capacitor aging. By keeping it dust free (meaning the temps stay down) you can help prevent it. I have an off brand PSU running in my wifes rig, I think its about 3 years old now. You don't need 500W+ PSUs that cost $100 to run a computer.
