Hey Guys

Try folow this guide EXACTLY as I have written it, I did it almost completely step-by-step! After having a few problems with changing the fan speeds using CCC I finally got it working. There were a few points left out in the guides already created and I decided to make my own that covered everything that I did. I set my fan speed at "40" and my non-load temperature dropped from 78C to 46C!
Anyway, here goes:

1. Open CCC (advanced setup)

2. Select the "ATI Overdrive" tab
- unlock by clicking on the padlock if you have not done this already

3. Untick "Enable ATI Overdrive"

4. Click on "Profiles" at the top of the window and select "Profile Manager"

5.
a. Type in any name under "Enter or select a profile name:". I used "40"
b. Tick all "ATI Radeoean HD 4800 Series [Monitor]" options under the tab Composition -> "the following settings"
c. click on the "+" next to this and tick "ATI Overdrive" only.
d. under the "Activation" tab tick "Desktop shortcut"
e. Click on "Close"

6. Open My Computer *ACTIVATE SHOW HIDDEN FILES (Tools > Folder Options > View)*, (leave CCC open) and go to either:

windows XP >> C:\Documents and Settings\username \Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\profile created .XML

windows vista >> C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\profile created .XML

7. Your profile should be here as a .xml file, right click the file and choose "edit"

8. Look for this part in the

<Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />

9. Change "Automatic" and "0" (in bold) to "Manual" and "40" (this can be any number 0-100, it is the fan speed in %), it should look like this now:

<Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="40" />

10. Save the file and exit notepad

11. Switch back to CCC

12. Click on the dropdown arrow next to "Profiles" -> "Activate Profile" -> "40" -or whatever you saved your profile as

13. Enjoy a 30C drop in temperatures!

14. Everytime you start windows just use the shortcut created on your desktop to activate the profile!

Here are the before and after affects of the "fan fix":

I get the feeling however that these cards were just designed to run at +-80C, and that is why the "Automatic" option is set for all cards as this seems to keep the card hovering around that point. I am sure ATI knew what they were doing :) However, I don't see how running your card 30C can do anything but good for the card...!

Thanks for the guide. Make sure you have Hidden files shown to find the file. Took me awhile to figure out where the file was.
