On newegg the 9800gx2 is going for $275, i currently have a 9800 gtx, is it worth the upgrade? or are the 4850/70 worth getting over them? or should i just stick with what i got. Running a e6420 @ 3.4ghz evga 680i sli mobo sooo crossfire is not an option. :o  anyway, yea if anyone can help me with this. I usually do all the research on my own and stuff, but ive been working soo much i havent had time to really look into this. Thanks :D  Also im not just looking for 2 card setup, im fine with 1 card with a single card, such as 4850/70. and i know i might have to get a new psu if i want 2 card, currently have an antec 500w psu

i dont see a point in upgrading now. ur 9800gtx should play all games maxed out. but if u must the 9800gx2 is a good card and ur antec 500w should handle it fine.

Oh, I didn't notice that you already have a 9800GTX. IMO I don't think it would be worth upgrading right now due to the lack of games that can push your card to the limit (with the exception of crysis, but who really cares about crysis?). Or unless you plan to run your games at a ultra high res like 2560x1600.

IMO I wouldnt buy it. That would be Because you would have to buy the new card, and a new power supply in order to get the gain you are looking for. It's just the fact that the Antec smartpower units are not powerful enough to handle that card.

its a good card but the card u have is still a high end card. u can play mostly all games currently out. i would just wait and pick up another 9800gtx later on when newer games become more demanding. if u didnt no 2 9800gtx sli beat 9800gx2.

hmmm ic, if i do get it with a new psu, would i get as much of a gain as the links on the second post? im not that familiar with sli cards, ive always been a single gpu kind of guy, but a menagetua of gpus :o , this would be my first. Also can i set sli with one of these cards?

Ah so 2 9800 gtx's is better than a 9800gx2? is there any sites that review this?

Both use the same 2 g92 core with 128 stream processors, but 9800gx2's are downclocked. So 9800gtx/g92 8800gts sli is faster, although not by a lot.

Do you think its safe to go by this website?

http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQ4OSw3...

shows the gx2 better in most cases, prob not by a lot but it does show it uses less power.

Also i have a 680i mobo, are the others way better? compared to mine? like 790?

gx2's cores are downclocked, of course it use less power.

600s Nvidia chipsets are among the worst when it comes to oc or ram compatibility. 790i, or any of the current Intel lineup, are far better.

they are downclocked but they still outperform the 9800 in sli? im wondering if those website reviews are right. I have some money to burn, but im still wondering whether the 9800gx2 is the way to go or not. hmmm

It shouldn't. Although since they're close, on some games it might possibly swing either way.

Yes but by a very small margin lol...a couple of frames, plus he can OC the GX2 to match the 9800 GTXs in SLI:)  while only occupying only 1 slot. :)  But I would have to agree with others, your card is more than enough for current gen games, even against the ones coming out by what I saw atleast (opinon not fact)
August 29, 2008 1:46:01 AM

Since you already have a 9800gtx, it'll cost less to add a second one than replacing it with 9800gx2.
August 29, 2008 1:47:44 AM

i kinda wanna keep the 1 slot config, and it would use less power, if anything i can oc it a bit =| hmmm i think im gonna take the plunge with the gx2. :o  thanks to everyone for replying and helping me out with this, if anyone one else still has something to say or links about this. plz im still open for more opinions. :D

I would have to go with Dagger on this 1, I mean if you had a 8800 GT or lower, I would say go with the GX2. But the 9800 GTX is a high end card (was a highend card).

Its too bad you can't pair it up with a 8800 GTS, it would save you even more:D .

I would say stay with 1, unless some games are un playable:)
August 29, 2008 1:59:12 AM

ugh fine :(  would a E8400 Oced more than my e6420 @ 3.4 help me now? lol if i oced an e8400 to 3.7? or more? how much more fps should i get, not that much? :o
August 29, 2008 2:26:31 AM

usually, in games atleast, CPU level counts more for loading times, physics and AI actions. I think very little matters for fps in most games.

Usually games with intense dynamic lighting or Volumetric Lighting would benefit from CPU, such as Fear, Crysis EtC.

Also I heard that HL2 (Source games) are influenced alot by the CPU, more so than the video card:D

I don't kno the E CPUs all that well:p
August 29, 2008 12:09:42 PM

hmm, i guess ill just stick with what i got then. Your right about no games not being out to really push my card. CSS is the only game i play atm since i played everything that was worth to play.

Oh wow, this article that just came out really helped me out lol

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-comp...

This thing was due to come out. Well at least i know im not getting the gx2 looks like im getting a single 4870, since 1280x1024 is what im usually play at. :o
August 29, 2008 2:48:17 PM

That article is messed up in my opinion, The 8800 Ultra in sli comes in 2nd??? Are you kidding? 1 280 GTX is twice as fast as 8800 Ultra, and the Ultra beast 2 280 GTX....

Anyways thats my opinion:)

yeaa i after reading more of that, i realized that cant be lol, the 4870 beating mostly everything in sli and other single card solution >< lol looks like tomshardware got a little generous with the fps for ati lol

im checking this out seems to show the new drivers for nvidia r helping.

That looks like just the factory overclocking creating the difference. You can overclock the card yourself for free, so there's really no point. :p
August 30, 2008 2:54:25 AM

the latest nvidia driver says its suppose to increase performance in single card setups and sli, i think its 177.92, i havent really benched it to see if a got an increase. On 3dmark vantage i get 74xx score. im assuming thats normal for my video card. and on 3dmark 06, i get 14k. I see the pre purchase of farcry2 is out on steam :o . I wonder how my computer will do in that game. I always want to play with everything high. i really dont like to put anything on medium or low ><.
