Hi all,
I'm trying to connect a laptop drive to my pc. The os on the drive is messed so I wanted to see if I could recover any data off of the drive. I've connected the SATA data and power cables and started up the pc but the laptop drive does not appear.
Am I missing a step? Is this even possible?

Laptop = Dell Inspiron 1501

Thanks,

The connectors should be identical. Check to make sure that you are hooking it into an enabled SATA port (you might have to enable your unused ports in the BIOS), but there shouldn't be any problem. Does it show up in disk management?

I'll give it a shot. I'll take a look at the BIOS. The drive isn't showing up at all so I think you might be onto something with the SATA port. brb.

I got it fixed.

Sorry for the late reply. Turns out that I had picked the one and only SATA2 port on my motherboard. I don't have any SATA2 drivers installed so the computer didn't know how to talk to the drive. I ended up using the SATA cable for my DVD drive and everything worked fine. No big mystery, I'm just an idiot. :-P

Thanks for the help though.
