New Build for aps and games

Beyond that, I see no reason to get DDR3 or pay for a board that needs it. Intel makes quality boards and all, but you can do much better for less.
Save a bunch of cash, because you need a better PSU.

You need more RAM for your stated use...

Let's see what else we can come up with:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131296 $160

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211188 $77

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102747 $170

I just saved you like $160 dollars for better performance... sorry to shoot down your choices like that, but it was not a very cost effective build.

You need to rethink the power supply now. The only case I know of that comes with a decent PSU is the Antec Sonata.

I agree. He should get 4850 or 4870, depending on his budget.
Also, with the same money, get 4 gig of DDR2 with tighter timings and different board (ASUS or Gigabyte are good). Lastly, CS3 takes advantage of multicore, so I'd get Q6600 or Q9450, again depending on the budget.

I did not realize that was a crossfire board, its the only build I used that one for, I wanted to do one with ddr3. I have 4 different builds going to give him different prices.

I dont know how much cs3 he will actually be using, he is in school for database I think and does different programming. He plays games al ot but does not want to spend too much on GFX. And will never SLI or Xfire.

Here is the 1st one I started working on b4 I went all nutty with the ddr3.

PS. The open box mobo is a place holder cuz new ones are due in soon.

That's a pretty good list but you won't need 1066 RAM, unless overclocking the CPU beyond 3.6Ghz.

The CPU natively runs at 333 FSB x 9. So RAM runs at 667, 1:1. So, no real performance gain by spending the extra cash. The 4 Gig kit I listed will get the job done just fine... You could buy 667, but with these prices it's good to leave some flex room.

Also, the ATI 4850 is a better performer for less cash. Really. See the new video card rating article on the front page.

If he's programming I'm pretty sure he wants a quad core. I haven't done any in years but I don't imagine compiling code got any less CPU intensive.

Thanks, will the 4850 or 4870 run well on a PCI 1.0 mobo? or do I need to find a 2.0?

Also, the 4850 you posted, I notice its the cheapist on newegg, Would a different one be better for xtra money? He is trying to get a good deal but is willing to pay xtra for quality or if its worth it.

I chose that one because it's a very old trusted maker. It's actually not the cheapest after rebates.

Actually, I really like the MSI offering:

The cooler should work far better than stock and prolong the life of the card.

You do not NEED PCI 1.0 If you are buying a MB now I would probably go ahead and get it.

The P45 I listed has it, and a lot of other nice features. What is with the Gigabyte availability? Do you know something? If you want to go Gigabyte look at this one:
