you can visit your computer manufacturers website and download the audio drivers.
click start, my computer, add remove programs, look at the list, find your old audio software on the list and delete it, restart the computer.
now turn off your antivirus, and if you have installed multiple security programs, turn them all off.
now load the new audio driver, restart the computer, turn the antivirus back on.

Watch this and you'll get your sound back, trust me I have a Hp pavillion dv1000 and it worked for me.
