"But slow sales of HDTV sets mean there is zero chance of hitting
85 percent market penetration by 2006, analysts say. As a result,
the FCC is rumored to be considering a new, more flexible
deadline of 2008 or 2009."

In the article,

<<Analysts say a typical HDTV set costs $1,000 or more, although less
desirable units with smaller, traditional aspect ratio TV screens are said
to be available for as little as $600. The catch, if there is one, is that
less expensive HDTV sets typically don't include an over-the-air receiving
device called a tuner. >>

I am living in Montreal. The dealers here are complaining that they cannot
get these sets in fast enough!

I myself have been working in service and support work for both broadcast
and consumer TV equipment. I am one of the few people in my area, and work
with, that does not own an HD set as of yet! I am however considering for
our family, the Sony front view LCD flat panel type set. My preference is
for something in the 40 to 50 inch size range. I am going to wait until
after the fall, or maybe after newyears. They are supposed to be releasing
some improved models. These will be less critical to the display viewing
angle.

I've had several people tell me you don't get the "true HDTV" experience
with a TV that small.

But they don't force you to pay for locals if you would rather receive
them OTA for free. Only cable does that....
