I just built a system and am running a gigabyte ATI 4870 X2. The temp runs around 60 celsius and goes up to 80 when playing vanguard. There is good air flow in my case (Thermaltake Xaser). How hot should this card be running?

that's fine some 4850's out there idle at 80 so your good

this temperture is quite good for an graphics card
especially an extreme one ----4870*2
