I just bought a Raven 2 case (absolutely amazing!), a EKL Alpenföhn Nordwand CPU cooler (great as well, I'd say one of the best air coolers out there) and a XFX Radeon 5870. I OC'ed my Phenom 9850 from 2,5 to stable 3,1. I did need some time to reach this and tampered with some other settings. Now I have the following: 14x; 222Mhz, 1,425V. As I said, it's stable and temps are fine, BUT, here it comes, I restart my PC (without even entering BIOS) and it's 2,8 GHz , I restart again, it's 3,1 Ghz . Can anyone explaing thins without involving aliens?!

what's your mobo?? i have an asus here that resets the cpu defaults when it fails to boot due to overclock... it does this automatically...

I have a Ausus M2N-SLI Deluxe. But the funny thing is - the OC is OK, it's stable, and after earch restart it switches from 3,1 to 2,8 with 2,8 not even being the stock speed!

hmmm i got the m2n-sli here... almost the same mobo... anyways.. when i increase too much fsb, it won't boot, then if i press reset, it will boot normally with fsb 200... maybe your multiplier is causing the 2,8... weird thing is it will boot normally every other time @ 3,1ghz... =/

I thought it might be failing due to an overclock issue, but usually then it'd drop the speed closer to 2.5 than 2.8 I'd have thought.
Is the frequency 2.8 or 3.2 or always 3.2 in Windows? Because that's where it matters.
If you think its O/C related, (might want to test this anyway), try lowering the FSB or slightly raising Vcore. FSB is the golden test though, if its lowered and she fires up perfectly then that's your answer.

Yup, I guess A bios upgrade is long overdue....... after the upgrade...... AI overclock it by 10% I'm on an M2N32SLI deluxe or then Manual OC..... Set the FSB and the RAM Timing correctly plus....... the voltages I wouldn't mess with if they are on automatic.... leave them...... you can OC even at 1.29V... I'd suggest try to lower the multiplier by a little.....

Thanks for the help, lads! I updated the BIOS to latest for my board. Now, instead of OC'ing in the BIOS, i used some software that came with my board, hadn't even tested it before. Now I use the same 14x multiplier and 222 Mhz, but I INCREASED the voltage to 1,45 - I didn't dare to go higher. Now it's perfectly stable - ran Prime95 for quite a long time and just played Crysis - all good. I haven't changed the timings or RAM coltages, though. haven't reall got into that yet. Are there any proven "best" setups?
I'd say that's pretty good. I guess you could fiddle with nrothbridge speeds and HT, but for that series processor I think that's as good as you'll get on the Reference clock.
I got my 9850 to 3.2 one shot, 3.15Ghz stable but the temps were kinda scary (for me anyway). I think I finally ran @ 3.0 for 24/7 use.
