My onboard sound has just suddenly screwed up. It is so staticy that you can barely hear the music. I've checked the speakers, but they work fine. I don't need anything special just something that works. I have no free slots of any kind open on my motherboard. I've seen USB sound cards online. Does anyone know if these work well? Are they just plug and play?

Not all of them work extremely well but they just work. You can get lucky with some though.

For the most part they're completely plug and play, using up 1 USB port. Some need an external power supply but those normally have built in amplifiers.
