I've been a gamer for a long time, but have always just purchased off-the-shelf Gateway and Dell systems. I figured it's finally time to put together a system for myself, so I can upgrade it over time easier and have more control over the system components.
Since I've never done this before, I was hoping some of the experienced builders on this board could take a look at my proposed build and provide any comments. Any compatability issues you see? Any suggestions for improvements?

Looks ok, great case by the way (look @ my specs) the advantage of that case is that is has great cooling opportunities and it's very silent. i would recommend to get another cpu cooler since the one you picked makes a lot of noise. go for something like the Sycthe Mugen or the Xigmatek S1283. both are very silent which i think i a must for a pc. good luck building!!

Go with SATA for your burner. Last i heard the Creative sound cards are still having problems with Vista, you might go with onboard sound and if it isn't good enough add an Asus sound card later. I agree with X5 on the Xigmatek S1283.
AC Freezer 7 Pro is very quiet, make sure you have a PWM motherboard. You may want to stick with the Zalman if you want to OC higher or get a Xigmatek. I'm not sure if your motherboard supports it, but my guess is it does. The E0 stepping for the E8600 looks nice if you will OC or just want lower temps but is it worth the $90 premium for it, a 0.16 GHz higher clock, and half a multiplier? If you save there, you can put that into a budget for another 4870 perhaps?

Creative sound cards are not having problems in Vista even months ago. The newest drivers and software for all Creative sound cards was just updated from the 30th of July to the 1st of August. The newest drivers are 2.18.4. Check my signature, I have a X-Fi XtremeGamer and it's amazing, I just need some money to upgrade to Z-2300 speakers. As well as drivers, the console, applications, ALchemy, etc was all updated in the mentioned timeframe.
