Hi all geeks,

This is my first post in this forum. Allow me to introduce myself, I live in Milton Keynes and love to play computer games. Bought PS3 for gaming but its not fulfilling my desire for gaming so decided to buy new computer. Currently what I am using is listed below:

Asus P4P800 Deluxe, Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 3.2GHz, 2GB (2x1024) DDR400 Dual Channel Linear Mode, XFX 7600GT 256MB AGP 8x.

I bought this motherboard back in 2003. Initially I bought Intel Celeron D processor cause I wanted to use overclocking feature of this monstor motherboard. For last 5 years, I only changed GPU and CPU cause old GPU was not running games anymore at good frame rate and I burnt my processor by overclocking too much. :lol:

Here is the list what I ordered now:

* Motherboard: Asus P5E3
* CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
* RAM: Corsair XMS3 DDR3 2GB (2x1024)
* GPU: Asus HD 4850 512MB GDDR3

Need your comments about it.

Thanks!!

If you already ordered and cannot cancel, all we can say is that you would have gotten something much better if you had bough DDR2-800 (cheaper) and bought a 4870 instead.

Just need your opinion my friend.

I know DDR3 is not needed yet but I do not want to spend again in next one year or so on PC. Also Quad Core is not needed yet as only few softwares utilize quad cores like 3dmax or DivX encoding. But I wanted future proof PC and I could have gone with E8400 which can easily overclocked around 3.6GHz.

About 4870; I would rather go for 4850 in crossfire; when needed.

What's the point of this post? You've already bought the stuff and you have reasons for your purchase. Waste of everyone's time.

When I said future proof, i mean next 2-3 years. I know there is no future proofing. When Nehalem comes out, another processor will be coming afterwards to make it obsolete.

There is no end to this war!

DDR3 as it is and as current chipsets/CPU uses it is not useful and it won't become better with time unless a manufacturer releases a BIOS which magically makes it better (which I doubt will ever happen).

Software can be optimized for specific CPUs and can be multi-threaded to take advantage of multiple core, but it is impossible to optimize it for specific kinds of memory (I know, I've been in the business for 8 years). Therefore, if a system using DDR3 performs as well as one with DDR2, the situation will stay the same in 2-3 years. The only difference is that when you switch your system in 2-3 years, you might be able to reuse the same RAM (if DDR4 isn't mainstream by then or if much better DDR3 didn't come-out).

Zenthar,

I got DDR3 for the price of DDR2, so why not get it then? and 4870 was going out of my budget so bought 4850.

Another quick question, Which PSU will be better to use with these specs. Currently I got 450 watts power supply.

What I was thinking if I overclock I might need 750+ watts. I am also thinking to get Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro LGA 775 CPU Cooler or is there any other good cpu cooler under £20. Also whcih GPU cooler you recommend, if needed.

OCing doesn't take that much juice unless you go water cooling and/or use a peltier. For the best cooler, see FrostyTech Top 5, the best price/noise/cooling seems to be the HDT-S1283.

For GPU cooling, if you feel you need extra over the stock 4850 cooler, I would say just get a 4870. The cooler will probably cost half the price gap between the 2 cards, but you won't get the extra 4870 benefits.

I got 2x1gb ddr2-1066 of ocz for 36.99 shipped. You found 2x1gb ddr3 for 37 bux? Newegg shellshocker deal. But frys still has 2x1gb of ddr2-800 4-4-4 latency for 44.99 or 5-5-5 latency for 39.99

http://shop1.frys.com/product/5385428?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

newegg has some corsair for 34.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145098

while the cheapest 2gb ddr3 at newegg is 67.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227309

and 69.99 at frys

http://shop1.frys.com/product/5533590?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

so I don't know how you found ddr3 for the same price as ddr2 I think you were looking at some jacked up prices for the ddr2

hands down ddr2 is cheaper than ddr3 I think you could have saved some moolah if you had looked harder

miketool,

I bought DDR3 from supplier, thats how got it in low price. Otherwise DDR2 was my first choice anyway.
