I havent bought anything yet but I am considering the following:
Case: Thermaltake Armor + Thermaltake 850W EPS12V Power Supply
Mobo: Asus Rampage
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz

RAM: 4 GB of OCZ Reaper 4-4-4-15 HCP Edition

HD: WD 500gb Sata 3.0gb 7200RPM

Vid Card: ATI 4870

then after market heatsink, fans, cathodes, fan controller and a bunch of other little things. ( DVD burner, Vista etc )

How would you rate this system? Its about $1300 on Newegg for everything

EDIT: New pieces in Red

Make sure that psu is Toughpower & the ram is ddr2.

Why not 9800GTX+?

Is the cpu gonna be o/c'ed?

Looks solid. I would reccommend the Xigmatek S1283 (with the retention bracket) if you're planning on overclocking.

Dont plan on OC'ing processor right away.. and forgive my ignorance what is 9800+? I have a 9800GTX on the build, is there something close in price that is better?

I recently just did a build and I am about to do another :pt1cable:

With my reads here, I have consistently heard bad majo about NVidia chipset MOBO's

Consider...

Intel X48 or X38 MOBO chipset (Asus or Gigabyte seem to be the popular ones here)
I did a Asus P5E Deluxe with my build and love it.

GPU......ATI 4870 or (2) 4870 Crossfired or 4870x2 (order less $ to higher $)

CPU.....Good

Memory.......OCZ popular choice here, I like Corsair.

PSU....seems good. I did an Antec 850W modular on my build and very happy. newegg still has a great deal on it.

CPU cooler.....+1 on Xigamatek S1283 (get the accessory retention bracket with it ACK -I7551 )

Hard Drive....

So changing to the new ATI card what mobo would you suggest?

I play a lot of games, mainly looking for a machine that can have a video card added to it and maybe 4gb more ram in the future.

I would get the Asus P5Q pro or the Gigabyte X48 and lastly the Asus RAMPAGE FORMULA. P5 is cheapest, which the gpu can only crossfire in x8 (about 10% less performance than x16) while the X48 has full x16 support but less OC ability than the rampage.
