Nope haven't tried it yet at work now. I've used riva tuner before with HD3870 in crossfire mode and it works great. I will try it when I get home later...

Unfortunately not yet a solution for variable fan speeds on 4870x2.

Please take a note that currently RivaTuner doesn't support direct access to generic I2C bus and flashrom on RV770 GPUs, so generic I2C bus access based features (e.g. RADEON HD 4870 X2 fan control and monitoring) and VGA BIOS image dumping features are currently not available.

I guess I have to step in here and correct myself. According to this thread over at guru3d some people are able to get 2.10 to work with the 4870x2.

Doesn't work on mine (Vista64, driver 8.54) unfortunately.

Interesting. The screenshot on the xtremesystems forum link you've provided shows fan settings, specific for ADT7473 sensor. So RT detected the external sensor properly and it can only mean that the sensor is connected to one of standard DDC I2C bus (which is fully supported by RivaTuner). At the same time, the sensor is connected to additional generic I2C bus (which is currently not supported neither by RT nor by any other diagnostic software) on some other X2s. So it looks like depending on PCB design you may be either lucky or not.
