I have just recieved my q6600 and opened the box. There is minimal info just the heatsink and the processor. I have looked at the heatsink and underneath it there seems to be grey strips. Am i right in assuming that thats the thermal pad/preapplied thremal paste?
I assume it'd not be a good idea to apply artic silver on the cpu aswell while leaving that on the heatsink?

If so shall i leave it be and just stick on the heatsink and save the artic silver 5 thermal paste.....or shall i remove it? If so how?

Also (quick noob question) i bought the go stepping 95w version but theres no mention of this on the box. Is it a simple case of looking at the serial number?

So yes that is the preapplied thermal material, although i've never seen it in strips like that before. It depends on the quality of the material, I've seen offbrand heatsinks with dubious looking thermal material, white junk without silver for heat conductivity.
I've also seen the thermal paste that comes with oem AMD x2 and x4 processors that does a phenomenal job.
If you plan on overclocking, then I would scrape off the thermal material. You could possibly use a blade for this, but I would try to avoid scratching the heatsink in the process. I typically will try to wipe off as much as I can with a soft rag or a paper towel that has been dampened with rubbing alcohol. To finish up I will dip cotton swabs in rubbing alcohol and clean excess gray gumminess off the surface.
Then you're ready to apply as5. I like to lap my heatsinks as I am an anal retentive sob and can't stand the machine marks. But it prolly only makes a difference of a couple celcius so I wouldn't expect anyone elso to do this.
I would NOT recommend doing both. Too much thermal material is as bad as too little.

what's the general consensus? as5 or preapplied pad?

Also with regards to the pic i posted above does anyone know how good it is?

That is the Intel factory thermal paste. It works fine just keep in mind that AS5 is just average on par with the stuff from Radio Shack. If you going to replace it I look for something better than AS5. Their Arctic Ceramique is a much better choice. There are some that are much better though, do some homework.

The stock stuff is just fine unless your really trying to get that extra little oc out of it.

I use AS5 cause it's so easy to find and how many years latter is still in the top ranks of every comparison.

If you do want to use something besides stock clean well and just apply a strip as shown on AS's site duals and quads are different here's some reviews to help you chose

AS5 is better than Ceramique, both by independent testing and the factory spec.

do you think i should keep the AS5 for when i decide to get a custom fan for oc'ng and leave the thermal pad for now?

I am sure that if intel warrantees their product at stock settings with stock fan for three years that the thermal compound included should do the job well.
Use the included compound.
When you upgrade the fan you will have another decision. Do I use the paste included with the aftermarket HSF or use something else?

so you reckon i should stick with the pad for now....till i get an aftermarket HSF?
