Now, for your 945G motherboard... from what I could dig up, it looks like it will support early gen C2D processors (but, mind you, I'm not CERTAIN that your specific motherboard will, because I'm not sure what your exact motherboard is).
Regarding the Pentium D 945, I would say no, it's not worth the money. You can get an entry level core 2 arch processor for half the price that will outperform it (granted, you may need to overclock it a bit).
More information about your situation would be helpful. What is your budget for this upgrade? What software do you use for your video editing? Do you game? If so, what games? Also, exact specs on your current machine will help us guide you in an upgrade/overhaul/rebuild.
You can likely get a motherboard and cheap dual core combo on Newegg for under $150 that will be significantly faster than your current processor.. Though im not sure that software supports multiple cores as i have never even heard of it.
Your board won't run any core2 duo cpus or 4xx celerons. You can go with the old high end pentium d 9xx series cpus, but you'll have some extra heat for your heatsink to deal with. It looks like a passive design; I would leave it alone unless you're experienced. But if you decide on an upgrade, check star micro also; they may have a better selection than newegg.
Gateway? Not going to do it. Prebuilds have only very limited BIOS chips installed. They will support very few upgrades, usually a small step up or two in the same processor family. The core 2 is a completely different family of processors, and technology. A Pentium D is essentially 2 P4's on the same chip. Overclocking? Forget about that on your Gateway.
If you want to upgrade your motherboard, you have more things to check as well. Make sure the board will fit first, and the power connections will fit, and then, when you go to reinstall Windows, if you have the Gateway Windows Disc, it is not going to let you install it on another motherboard.
So you will need to buy another version of Windows with your new motherboard.
Just some things to think about and check out before you start spending money.
you could easily get a new motherboard and cpu for $150 your ram should work on the new motherboard, if I recall right the Pentium D mobos used DDR2 as well.
little more then $150 straight but nothing more then you can just collect a few bottles to get the extra coins
I am sure you could get some better offers if you ask some of the dudes that use $as currency since we don't over here and I hardly ever look at newegg for stuff.
swapping motherboard takes about an hour (2 if it is your first time) but it ain't hard, just one part at a time
