WILL MY INTEL MOTHERBOARD 945G (BIG LAKE) SUPPORT C2D.

THE CHIPSET IS 945G/GZ REV A2
SOUTHBRIDGE 82801GB(ICH7/R)
BIOS PB94510J

MY CURRENT CPU IS A PENTIUM D 820.

IF IT DOES NOT SUPPORT C2D , WOULD IT BE WORTH IT TO GET A PENTIUM D 945.

I REALLY CAN'T BUY ANOTHER COMPUTER.

I DO SOME ENTRY LEVEL VIDEO EDITING.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

I have no idea what motherboard u have so I can't answer the question.
Is it by any chance one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] el%20945G#

NOT ANY OF THOSE.

THE PRINTOUT FROM MY COMPUTER ONLY SAYS IT'S AN INTEL MODEL D945GBL. THIS IS IN A GATEWAY FX400 MC AND I UNDERSTAND THE BL STANDS FOR BIG LAKE.

First, please stop typing in all CAPS.

Now, for your 945G motherboard... from what I could dig up, it looks like it will support early gen C2D processors (but, mind you, I'm not CERTAIN that your specific motherboard will, because I'm not sure what your exact motherboard is).

Regarding the Pentium D 945, I would say no, it's not worth the money. You can get an entry level core 2 arch processor for half the price that will outperform it (granted, you may need to overclock it a bit).

More information about your situation would be helpful. What is your budget for this upgrade? What software do you use for your video editing? Do you game? If so, what games? Also, exact specs on your current machine will help us guide you in an upgrade/overhaul/rebuild.

Sorry, I am an old guy and new at this upgrade process.

I found what seems to be my motherboard.

http://www.skyline-eng.com/index.c [...] ct_ID/5087

It says it only supports Pentium 4 processors. What I don't understand is my system came with a Pentium D 820.

I was trying to see what I could do for less than $150.

I do no gaming and I use Pinnacle Studio Plus V 10.5. I plan on getting V12.

Which specs do you need. I have a print out from CPU-Z software I ran.

Thanks for your help.

You can likely get a motherboard and cheap dual core combo on Newegg for under $150 that will be significantly faster than your current processor.. Though im not sure that software supports multiple cores as i have never even heard of it.

Your board won't run any core2 duo cpus or 4xx celerons. You can go with the old high end pentium d 9xx series cpus, but you'll have some extra heat for your heatsink to deal with. It looks like a passive design; I would leave it alone unless you're experienced. But if you decide on an upgrade, check star micro also; they may have a better selection than newegg.

First thing you could do is tidy up the hard drive with a cleanup and defrag.

Then I suggest you look and see how much ram is in the machine and consider expanding it to 2Gb or so if it isn't - I assume your running XP.

You could buy a much larger and faster HDD than what was originally fitted -which will improve performance for you.

Did you look in the bios to see if there were any overclocking options available for that version of the motherboard?

If so, you might be able to overclcok it a little.

I found a lot of 945 mobos did not support overclocking though.

I wish you luck !

Gateway? Not going to do it. Prebuilds have only very limited BIOS chips installed. They will support very few upgrades, usually a small step up or two in the same processor family. The core 2 is a completely different family of processors, and technology. A Pentium D is essentially 2 P4's on the same chip. Overclocking? Forget about that on your Gateway.
If you want to upgrade your motherboard, you have more things to check as well. Make sure the board will fit first, and the power connections will fit, and then, when you go to reinstall Windows, if you have the Gateway Windows Disc, it is not going to let you install it on another motherboard.
So you will need to buy another version of Windows with your new motherboard.

Just some things to think about and check out before you start spending money.

OK, lots to think about.

Sounds like with my current sys the 9xx d is about the only way to go. I have seen OEMs for about $104.

Too many things have to mesh in going with a new motherboard for my current gateway tower.

I already have 4 GB of DDR2 533 installed.
NVIDIA Ge Force 6600.
250GB ATA Hard Drive. About 1/3 free.

In case I opt for a new PC any suggestions on entry level sys to do video editing.

THANKS!!

$104 for a 945 D.

Sounds like the best you can do then - it is a bit faster (600Mhz)and the extra cache (double) will help with the stuff you want to do.

One you get it going make sure you monitor the temps for a while - especially under load.

you could easily get a new motherboard and cpu for $150 your ram should work on the new motherboard, if I recall right the Pentium D mobos used DDR2 as well.

C2D E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz 3MB Cache $118 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115052
TForce TP35D2-A7 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX $52
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 813138075R

little more then $150 straight but nothing more then you can just collect a few bottles to get the extra coins

I am sure you could get some better offers if you ask some of the dudes that use $as currency since we don't over here and I hardly ever look at newegg for stuff.

swapping motherboard takes about an hour (2 if it is your first time) but it ain't hard, just one part at a time :)
