Program window appear on 2nd mintor not plugged in

I use my laptop at work with dual monitors and at home as a single
monitor.

When I switch back to a single monitor, some programs actually still
try to open in the second monitor (that is not plugged in). So I end
up with a taskbar window showing the program but the application
window is not visible. If I minimize and maximize I can see the
window flashing to open in the second monitor (Again that isn't
plugged in)

Any ideas on how to get them back? Right clicking on the taskbar app does nothing

Right-Click in open area of desktop, select Properties. Click Settings tab.
Select the missing monitor in the drop-down box,
Uncheck "Extend my Windows desktop to this monitor" Click Ok.

Naw... I just do my homework on this stuff and hope for the best....

What programs have the issue? I work with at least one program that will remember the screen location and will open there no matter what. Including if the monitor is not there. It puts the screen pixel location in an .ini file as last opened and will try to open in that location. You may need to manually move the screen over to the single monitor before exiting the application.

Tigs solution may work, but if not, keep the app settings in mind.
