Hi guys, im new here, but always read the forum!

wanted to check something with you:

does anyone had oced a q9550 with a gigabyte p35-ds3p?

i was wondering if any of you did it, cause i would like to reach at least 400 mhz more, and wanted to ask you some advice, i got this ram:
OCZ OCZ2P10664GK DDR2 PC2-8500 1066 MHz Platinum Series 4 GB

# EPP 5-5-5-18/(CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
# 1066MHz DDR2 /Unbuffered
# 2.1 - 2.2V/240 Pin DIMM

what do you suggest? thx! :)

This should be your first stop.

This should be your second stop. You need to know something about thermal management or you can fry your CPU. It's actually kind of difficult to fry a modern CPU, but it is possible.

Third stop will be a guide for your particular motherboard. Google is your friend.

For anything higher than about 3.0 GHz, you will need better cooling. Here are two under $50 heatsinks that are pretty popular:

They both require a somewhat different approach to applying thermal compound.
Suggestions for applying thermal compound:

And they are pretty large, so they might not fit inside your case.

Go through the first two threads. Do not do anything until you have a good idea about what you are trying to do. Once you have definite questions (you will, you will :)), come back and ask.

Keep in mind that these are guides, not cookbooks. YMMV. Your Mileage May Vary. Because of all the variables, you may not do as well as someone else with a similar system. Or you might do better.

i set the memory multi to 2.5, FSB and MCH voltages to +.1 and then raised the fsb and was able to obtain 3.197 ghz without upping the voltage on the processor :) and temps didnt increased as well!, ill try to raise a little more and get 3.4 ghz

I am not a fan of overclocking memory. Try setting your mem multiplier to 2.00 and pushing your FSB freq higher.

I had a Q6600 OC'd to 3.6 GHz (400 MHz X 9) in my EP35-DS3P. At a 400 MHz FSB frequency, a 2.5 mem mult yields a mem clock of 1000 MHz. Yes, you can buy DDR2-1066 RAM, but the timing will be 5-5-5-15. That is just as fast as DDR2-800 RAM running at 4-4-4-12.

@jsc

My cat yesterday stood exactly identical to the position of your avatar pic, when I saw her doing that I thought about your pic and busted out laughing, unfortunately she didn't stay like that long enough to get a picture of her.

It was cool though !, LOL Ryan

today, i had overclocked a little more the cpu, set the mem multi to 2.4, and was able to reach 3.37 ghz easy, without upping the cpu voltage or any other voltage, right now im running at 3.37 ghz 445(fsb) x 7.5, rock solid so far :D

had a problem at 3.37 ghz and went back to 3.187, ill try again on the weekend :) temps were fine! im in venezuela (very hot country) and without air conditionated at full load reached 57 celsius! (this was at 3.37 ghz), with air condionated powered on, the temps at full load barely reached 50 celsius
