E5200 ?

I already know that it is not the fastest but I was telling a friend about how I had a dual-core and that it ran @ 2.5 ghz and they asked me if each core ran @ 2.5 or if the whole cpu ran @ 2.5 ? I said I did not know? Can you help explain this question?
