Ram installation for Vista 64 bit system

Working on a first time computer build. q9450 quad core, Vista 64 bit system. I plan to install minimum 4 GB DDR2 ram (2X2GB). However, I thought I read somewhere to start by installing only 1x2GB memory module first (channel A1), then install/setup Vista. Later, add the 2nd 1x2GB module in (channel B1). (Maybe this applies to Vista only.)

Any thoughts? What is the correct path for a new computer build?
Should I just install the entire 4GB from the beginning?
How about 8GB? Can I upgrade later to 8GB? or is it better to install the entire 8GB from the beginning?

The >2GB install issues with Vista apply only to pre-SP1.

If you have Vista SP1, then you shouldn't have any problems.

I installed Vista with 4gb (4x1gb no less) of ram present and didn't have any problems.

I just finished putting together a Q9650 with 8gb ram and Vista Ultimate with no problems.

Update. I installed 4GB and works fine. (Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit)

I have XP 64-bit...but it didn't recognize 4gb of ram.
is it vista only?
